Guide to Chadderton

Nestling on the side of the pennines, most visitors have the impression of a quaint little town. with a village green and farms. Not so! Although Chadderton Fold is still a village, the rest of the town has developed into a bustling metropolis at the centre of a motorway network second to none. Around it, because of the ease of communication, the Broadway Business Park, the Elk Mill Business Park and numerous other conglomerations have developed, taking the place of the cotton mills, coal mines and other traditional factories with warehouses, retail supermarkets and other communication outlets.

But; becoming more commercial, doesn't mean we have to discount the history of this town and the myriad of interesting things there are to do in this populated settlement of ours.

Newly restored, and encouraging all kinds of leisure possibilities, is the Rochdale Canal. Already, two inns, alongside the Canal, are reaping the rewards of this endeavour. The Boat & Horses, for meals and the accompanying Travel Inn, is ideal for canal or motorway traffic, and also the hostelry further down the canal, The Rose of Lancaster, is ideally placed for business lunches, and excellent evening meals.

Both these inns have an interesting history, the Boat & Horses, was once used as a morgue because of the number of drownings there were in the canal, and the Rose of Lancaster had as its landlord, at the time of the Peterloo uprising, the rebel Mr O'Connor, who refused to take the oath of loyalty to the crown.

There are two other hotels in the immediate area, The Bower MacDonald, and the Whitegate Hotel and Travel Inn. Why not make one of these hotels your base to explore not only Chadderton, but only a stones throw from Tandle Hill Country Park, Hollingworth Lake, Daisy Nook Country Park. Canal trips, walks, and fishing on the Rochdale Canal. Further away, but with easy motorway access, Manchester, Blackpool and the Flyde Coast , Southport, Pendle Hill and the Forest of Bowland. In other words, Chadderton is the ideal place to explore and discover Real Lancashire. And only eighteen minutes from Manchester Airport.
